Indian Film Awards - inclusive of Oscars

The Indian Film fraternity is awarded by various Production and
Television Channels in appreciation of their laborious efforts and
entertaining the nation with the largest number of films produced in
the world each year.

The Indian film Industry is appreciated not only in India but also in
the western countries. There is no dearth of film awards in India.

Infact, first there were only the Filmfare Awards, which were
considered to be the highest level of film awards. The Government of
India instituted awards like Dadasaheb Phalke Award to promote films
in india.

After some years, there were also the beginning of the Screen Awards,
The Zee Cine Awards,Stardust Awards and many more of them. This surely
shows the level of appreciation of the film industry by the
population. There are a few categories of awards that need to be
appreciated, which unfortunately are not done in some of the awards.
Example the filmfare awardees are only the ones that have their
contribution in the Hindi films, thus the contribution of the people
in the other regional fims are neglected. This explains the need for
the more new awards in the coming generations.

The IIFA Awards is one such example, where the Indian film industry is
awarded on the international front. Though the presence of the Oscar
awards has always been prominent, the most striking feature of this
award is the excellence contributed by the luminaries of only the
Hindi film industry.

Indians films still have a long way to got to Oscar Awards. "Shwas"
becomes the fourth Indian entry to the coveted annual academy awards
and the first film in the Marathi language from Maharashtra being sent
for the Oscar. This was a poignant theme that has made an impression
enough be nominated for the top shot.

Lagaan Salaam Bombay, the more recent Lagaan and the classic Mother
India, though they haven`t come home with the golden statuette, were
others that did get close. Mira Nair`s Salaam Bombay was unique in
that it picturised real slum people without the star-cast, avoiding
commercial appeal altogether. The film made it into the top five
foreign film nominees too, like `Lagaan` to come later . Yet it fell
short.

And the star - Aamir Khan had stationed himself in Los Angeles weeks
before the big day to canvass in a way no Indian film-maker had done
before.India is the only country where an individual has won an
Honorary Oscar for outstanding contribution - Satyajit Ray.Yet the
film-award remains elusive yet.

The victory of Slumdog Millionaire in Oscars has however, completely
changed the scenario. We have Oscar-winners from the fraternity as
Rehman, Resool Pukootty and Gulzaar Saab.

Filmfare Awards- Fascinating Relevations

Winners of First Film Fare Awards

Filmfare Awards were first called Clare Awards, constituted in 1954 after the name of Clare Mendonca (the Times of India film critic who died the year of the first awards, 1954). A dual voting system was developed in 1956.

To celebrate the 25th year of the awards the statues were made in Silver.

To celebrate the 50th year the statues were made in Gold.

Gregory Peck was expected to be the guest of honour at the first ever awards (March 21, 1954 at the Metro theatre, Mumbai). He couldn't make it to the function since his flight from Colombo got delayed. Peck, however, did attend the banquet that followed the award nite.

The first awards function was held on 21 March 1954, and only five awards were presented that day– for the best film , the best director, the best actor, the best actress, and the best music director.

At the first “Clares” Awards function, Bimal Roy’s ‘Do Bigha Zameen’ won the award for the best film; Bimal Roy went home with the Best Director award. Dilip Kumar was adjudged as the Best Actor (Male) for ‘Daag’, while Meena Kumari won her statuette for Baiju Bawra. Naushad was bestowed with the Best Music-director for his beautiful compositions in the Bharat Bhushan starrer, ‘Baiju Bawra’.

Lata Mangeshkar refused to accept her first Filmfare award because the Filmfare statuette was designed in the shape of a woman and “the woman had no clothes on”; the award had to be wrapped with a handkerchief for it to be accepted by the Nightingale.

In 1969, Sunil Dutt lost the best actor’s statuette to Dilip Kumar; Sunil organized a party for Dilip Kumar soon after the awards function, starting the trend of post-award parties.

In 1975, Yash Chopra's Deewaar swept all the awards except, surprisingly, for the lead actor Amitabh Bachchan.

One of Filmfare’s mighty losers has been ‘Sholay’, which won only one award in 1975- for Best Editing!!!

Vani Ganpathi and Kamal Haasan got married on the day of the 25th Filmfare Awards; they attended the award nite with their garlands still around their necks.

The award for Best Choreography was instituted only in 1988. Saroj Khan won it for Madhuri’s sizzling “Ek Do Teen…” number from ‘ Tezaab ’.

As the Filmfare award function of 1991 came to an end, the entire crowd ran towards Amitabh Bachchan as he stood up near the pool. One of the planks cracked, and Amitabh Bachchan had to do a filmy style rescue operation to save Rakhee from falling.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’sBlack holds the record of winning the maximum number of Filmfare Awards. It won 11 at the 51st Filmfare Awards.

Dilip Kumar has been nominated for 19 Filmfare Best Actor Awards in all and he won 8 awards for Best Actor (a record). Shah Rukh Khan has been nominated for 17 times and won 7 times. Amitabh Bachchan has been nominated for 28 Filmfare Best Actor Awards in all (a record) but won 4.

54th Idea Filmfare Awards

54th Idea Filmfare Awards

54th Idea Filmfare Awards

54th Idea Filmfare Awards

It was a night to forget differences and bond together to celebrate and reward a year of hard work as the who’s who of the film industry – including Shahrukh Khan , who still has his arm in a sling – gathered together at Mumbai’s Yashraj Studios. Interestingly, SRK and Gauri Khan took seat next to the Bachchans . Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor sat with Rekha .

THE HOSTS:

 54th Idea Filmfare Awards

Hosts Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan rocked the night with their wit, humour and chutzpah. Imran mimicked mamu Aamir Khan by going bare-chest in the Ghajini style and writing the awards on his chest. Ranbir spoofed SRK’s act from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

The two young hosts also argued about who among them would be the next superstar. Ranbir told Imran: “Bura mat manna, lekin log tera naam sun kar Aamir Khan ke baare mein sochte hain”. To which Imran replied: “aur tera naam soch kar Sonam Kapoor ke baare mein sochte hain”. Even as the two stars argued, Darsheel Safary ( Taare Zameen Par ) emerged on stage and proclaimed himself as the next superstar.

Segments of the show were also hosted by Karan Johar , Konkona Sen Sharma and Deepika Padukone .

PERFORMANCES:

 54th Idea Filmfare Awards

The most sterling performance of the evening came from Farhan Akhtar , who sang rock numbers from his film Rock On . Katrina Kaif performed to a medley of her songs while Neil Nitin Mukesh took the stage with Bipasha Basu. Shahid Kapur impressed with his energetic dance performance; Abhishek Bachchan was cool-as-a-cucumber as he got jiggy with a bunch of babes on the tunes of “Maa Da Ladla”.

EMOTIONAL MOMENTS:

The most emotional moment of the night was when Arjun Rampal accepted the award for the Best Supporting actor for his performance in ‘Rock On’. Overwhelmed by emotion, the actor choked on his words and broke down.

Another charged up moment was when Shahrukh Khan took the stage and raved about the success of Slumdog Millionaire and particularly of A R Rahman and Resul Pookutty at the Oscars. Rahman was present at the function with a few kid stars of ‘Slumdog’.

The evening itself began on a patriotic note with the playing of the National Anthem.
