Akshay Khanna's Strange Behaviour at IIFA 2009

Akshaye Khanna was in attendance at a recently concluded international awards to promote his coming film ShortKut The Con Is On but he was missing for all the events related to the film.

That's not all. He was present at the award ceremony but didn't go up on the stage to collect the award when his name was announced (For Race in the Best Actor in A Negative Role category).

Khanna's behaviour was rather strange. He has been to award shows abroad earlier but never has he acted like this. He not only neglected the promotional event for his upcoming film but also failed to pick up an award the next night at the awards ceremony.

Anil Kapoor, the producer of ShortKut specially flew down from the States where he is shooting for the American television show 24, to unveil the first promo of the film at the function. The organisers flew in Amrita Rao, Arshad Warsi and other cast members of the film.

But when the time came to promote the film, the Indian and international press kept waiting for Khanna, who went MIA for no apparent reason.
Anil Kapoor picked up his award instead. It was later discovered that he had already left the building.

Anil all over at IIFLA 2009

Anil KapoorImage by angshah via Flickr

The 6th year IFFLA opened on April 2, 2009 and continued till 26th. It
began with the traditional red carpet reception for the stars,
directors, producers, sponsors and big names in the film business.

Undoubtedly, the most sought after in the glittering line of
celebrities was Anil Kapoor, who was seen patiently obliging the media
with his charismatic demeanor even as the inaugural address was well
on its way by Marouda inside the theater.

A special reception was given at the Theater for Anil Kapoor on the
night of April 23 when the World Premiere of the English version of “
Gandhi, My Father” was screened. Before the show, Screen Actors Guild
President Alan Rosenberg presented a SAG card signifying Kapoor’s
membership. In an absorbing Q & A session following the movie, a very
emotional Kapoor responded to questions on the making of the troubled
relationship between the Mahatma and his eldest son and the compelling
reasons why he took on the responsibility of doing the role. Following
a philosophical introduction Kapoor closed with “ If we succeed ,
thank you very much – if we don’t , it’s okay!”

Pride of Opening Night Screening went to “ The Fakir of Venice” shot
in the gorgeous setting of the European city with a bizarre story line
which would have seemed far fetched had it not been introduced by its
director Anand Surapur and one of the lead actors Annu Kapoor as
being based on a true story.

The event showcased 36 films from 7 countries, including 4 world and 8
U.S. premieres. It was a great honor to present a tribute to Anil
Kapoor, star and Bollywood legend with over 100 films under his belt
and that three of his movies, ‘Gandhi My Father,’ ‘Virasat’ and
‘Lamhe’ were screened with the man himself in attendance.

The film festival continues to support filmmakers and not just their
films with its successful One-on- One program that brings together a
diverse mix of film professionals for brief, casual and intimate
meetings with participating filmmakers.

The Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) is an annual film festival held in Los Angeles, California. Established by Christina Marouda in 2003, these awards pave the way for a greater appreciation of Indian cinema and diverse culture by providing the public with a selection of films from and about the Indian diaspora by Indian and international filmmakers.

It catalogs features and documentaries, and presents Grand Jury and Audience Choice awards in the following categories:
Best Feature

Best Short Story
Cinematic Scoring Achievement Award

The 7th Annual Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) will be held between April 21-26, 2009, at ArcLight Hollywood. The tribute to Kapoor will include screenings of his films LAMHE (1991) and VIRASAT (1997) as well as the world premiere of the English language version of GANDHI, MY FATHER (2007). Kapoor produced the film, which explores the cost Mahatma Gandhi’s own family bore due to his efforts to free the nation of India.

Kapoor first appeared on the big screen in HAMHARE TUMHARE in 1979. His first lead role followed four years later in the film WHO 7 DIN (1983). Other notable titles include CHAMELI KI SHAADI (1986), MR. INDIA (1987), RAM LAKHAN (1989), EESHWAR (1989), TAAL (1999) and PUKAR (2000). Upcoming films include the action thriller RACE 2.

Kapoor's Humble Acceptance

Kapoor said, “I am thrilled to be a part of the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles and honored that they have chosen to include my work as an actor and producer. With the incredible success of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, the timing could not be better. I feel as though I have come full circle. In November, I attended the AFI FEST premiere of Slumdog Millionaire at the ArcLight Theatre. Now, some five months later, I am humbled and honored that my work as an actor and filmmaker has been chosen to receive such a fantastic tribute at the same venue.”

IFFLA Festival Director Christina Marouda said, “We couldn’t be more proud and excited to shine the spotlight on such striking and dynamic figures as Anil Kapoor.
