International Indian Film Academy Awards 2011

Bollywood actor Salman Khan starrer Dabangg put the foot forward at the International Indian Film Academy awards, organized and for the first time in North America.Dabangg won Best Film award and the highly essential music categories for best female playback singer, best male playback singer and best music direction, as well as best screenplay. On the other side, Shahrukh Khan starrer My Name is Khan in which SRK is showcased as a Muslim suffering from Asperger's syndrome who is put under custody at a US airport after his disability is mistaken for mistrustful behaviour, got awards for best story and best lyrics.

The hit movie, nominated in seven categories, also took home the prize for best direction.Shahrukh has taken the trophy for Best Actor in My Name is Khan with him and asserted that it’s great that he’s getting the award from Million Dollar Baby and Slumdog Millionaire stars. My Name Is Khan gave SRK that reason to speak his own mind with a character. Karan Johar won the best director award for My Name Is Khan. American actor Cuba Gooding Jr presented him the award.

A simple girl who made her mark in Bollywood soon and established herself as an accomplished actress so far, Anushka Sharma won the award for Female Leading Role for Band Baaja Baraat. The actress said that it feels great and thanked Toronto for all love and support.Indian screenwriter Shibani Bhatija won Best Story for My name Is Khan. The IIFA launched in 2000 at the Millennium Dome in London, the annual IIFA awards were organized in eleven cities around the world, including Colombo, Macao, Bangkok, Dubai, Amsterdam and Johannesburg. The award is particularly designed to celebrate the popular Hindi-language film fraternity and win new audiences internationally .
